According to Associated Press reports by Cristian Salazar on sites such as Guardian Unlimited and the San Jose Mercury News, Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday. We have lost one of our most prominent and influential authors.
From what I have read and heard of Kurt Vonnegut, he was brilliant, witty, and straight-forward. I remember being both pleased by his straightforwardness and amused by his wit in an interview I once encountered in one of Mark Molander's English classes (unfortunately, I do not recall who the interviewer was, what organization the interviewer represented, or even what medium the interview originally appeared in). Somehow, though, I do not think I have ever actually read any of Vonnegut's books, but I did buy a copy of Slaughterhouse-Five at some point and it is currently sitting on a shelf in my living room with several other books I have been meaning to get around to reading, so I think I will remedy that situation soon.
