Early To Bed, Early To Rise, and Back to a Fairly Normal Sleeping Schedule

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 — 8:08am (PDT)

I have not been sleeping as much as I would like over the past few weeks—I barely slept for over a week after getting food-poisoning and I have been dealing with computer problems both before and after that—but I may be able to proceed with a fairly normal sleeping schedule now. Normal for most other people, that is; left to myself, I feel perfectly comfortable being awake at night and I suspect I could maintain a regular nocturnal schedule as long as I get enough sleep and as long as that sleep is restful, but nocturnality does rather severely limit the amount of time during which one may interact with diurnal people and organizations—especially those organizations that are only in operation for eight or so hours per day, making whatever products or services they may offer largely unavailable to those who sleep solely or primarily during those particular hours. Thus, I try to conform to the diurnal schedule of which most of humanity seems so fond.

Yesterday afternoon, following a night without sleep and days or perhaps even weeks without a night with enough of it, I dozed in my living room despite a ruckus that sounded like children playing in the stairwell and out in front of the building. I was roused by my telephone ringing in my office, so I dashed back to answer it. It was a personal call—Scott calling to ask about getting together for a card game of some sort today (whether Magic: The Gathering, Texas hold 'em, or something else I cannot say)—so I left my office and tiredly stumbled my way to my bed, where I plopped down on top of my covers and finished the call quickly then fell back asleep, still fully clothed.

I awoke in darkness to the sounds of sprinklers, still laying fully-clothed on top of my bed coverings. Having been awake when the sprinklers behind the building have started before, I knew it must be early morning and a glance at my alarm clock confirmed through distant, slightly blurry numbers that it was shortly after 2:00am. Having noticed both the sprinklers and the time, nothing else seemed to require my attention save for my body and brain requiring additional sleep, to which they returned me swiftly.

I awoke again around 5:00am or so and soon discovered that my thoughts were of neither sleeping nor being awake, but of a hunger telling me that having slept through dinner time last night, I was ready for an early breakfast today. I had slept enough; it was time to rise for the day.
