Sleeping on the Couch and the Sounds of Morning

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007 — 8:25am (PDT)

I hardly ever intend to sleep on my couch, but when a book and my eyelids have all three grown heavy, setting my book aside and reaching for a light switch seems a perfectly reasonable conclusion to a late night of reading, especially when I have just barely awakened from a little doze and rising from the couch and dragging myself off to bed seems rather an ordeal. Sometimes, I am so tired that my book and the hand or hands holding it simply fall toward their shadows and I slip effortlessly into slumber in a light-filled room.

Last night, I mustered just enough strength to set The Art of War aside and darken my living room. I left all of my windows and blinds open, though, so light and the sounds of morning on Saratoga Avenue roused me rather earlier than I needed to rise today, but I do enjoy listening to the birds and squirrels in the morning, so I am always happy to be up with them. The roar of vehicles passing by I could do without, of course.

The squirrels seem curiously absent this morning, but I imagine they may be around later this morning if the frequent remodeling of a nearby house has not driven them off. I enjoy their chittering and bouncing about.

One advantage to being single and living alone is that there is plenty of room for me to sleep on my couch. Unfortunately, that also means there is nobody around to prod me to get up and brush my teeth before falling asleep for the night.
