One Ring, Again and Again and Again

Thursday, June 28th, 2007 — 3:58am (PDT)

I signed up for land-line telephone service last week and soon discovered that while the service via my dining room telephone jack corresponded to my new telephone number, the service via my office telephone jack was not mine at all, but that of someone living in a completely different building down the street after Saratoga Avenue turns into Bellomy Street. Someone from AT&T fixed the problem a few days later—on Monday—and before he left, we tested the jack in my bedroom and discovered it to be connected to the same wrong service, so he fixed that too.

That is the short version of the story to explain some of what has come before something strange that has been happening this morning, with some of the previous annoying stuff left out.

Several times this morning—all after 3:00am, I think—my telephone rang one time then stopped, whether I tried to answer it or not. I do not know whether this could be another technical problem or whether someone is trying to harass either me or a previous user of my telephone number, but either way, it is a rather unpleasant thing to happen so early in the morning.

It seems that perhaps I should have opted for the caller ID, which—despite being standard for mobile telephone service—still requires payment of an additional fee for use with land-line telephone service. In 2007. 2007 A.D.

There have been no further rings while I have been typing this entry, so perhaps the incident has concluded. I hope so because I would like to get some sleep.
