Last week, I bought some so-called red delicious apples from a recently renamed Lucky store and I was disappointed to discover that the first one I wanted to eat was partly rotted around its stem. I cut away the bad parts of the apple then ate the rest, not enjoying it very much—partly because the experience was tainted by my discovery of the rotted portion of the apple and partly because the apple tasted bland. Obviously, I was not eager to eat another apple from the same batch, so days passed without me doing so.
Tonight, I decided to eat another apple. This one looked fine externally and the first few bites tasted pretty good—much better than the first apple. Then I bit into an anomaly of some kind—whether rot, the work of some worm or bug, or whatever else I cannot tell—but I doubt it is simple rot since it appears to have been entirely inside the apple. Whatever the anomaly is, it was enough to stop me from finishing my apple, so the partially eaten fruit now sits on my desk browning and about to be discarded.
I wonder if a third apple might be better than the first two. I have my doubts.
What a waste this batch of apples has been. The store from which I bought them is called "Lucky", so perhaps they should be called "bad luck" apples instead of "red delicious" apples, which is only half right.
