It may be easy for some to dismiss the widespread praise of Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight as post-mortem hype, but having seen the movie, I think he did a fantastic job. He really threw himself into his character, so when I saw him on screen, he didn't seem like Heath Ledger as the Joker; he seemed like the Joker.
In the completeness of some of his portrayals, Ledger's transformations are reminiscent of the masterful performances of his fellow Dark Knight actor, Gary Oldman, who is in my opinion one of the finest actors I have ever seen, regardless of time or place.
Heath Ledger's death was a great loss indeed.
